A cross-axis universal joint has a simple structure, mainly consisting of a cross-axis, universal joint yoke, and needle roller bearings. It allows transmission shafts to operate at large angles, but a non-constant velocity phenomenon occurs during transmission, meaning the angular velocity of the input and output ends are not equal. This universal joint is usually used in combination at both ends of the transmission shaft, and the effect of the non-constant velocity phenomenon is reduced by a specific arrangement method.
Universal Joint
A universal joint is a key component of a driveshaft assembly, capable of efficiently transmitting power even at varying angles. Common types include the cross-type and constant-velocity universal joints.
The cross-type universal joint features a simple structure, mainly consisting of a cross shaft, universal joint yoke, and needle roller bearings. While it can operate at large angles, it exhibits non-uniform velocity during transmission, resulting in unequal angular velocities between the input and output ends. This type is typically used in pairs, one at each end of the driveshaft, with specific arrangements to mitigate the effects of non-uniform velocity.
Constant-velocity universal joints are primarily used in the half-shafts of front-wheel-drive vehicles, maintaining equal input and output angular velocities during operation. Their structure is more complex, with various forms such as ball joint and ball fork types. Taking the ball joint type as an example, it contains an outer and inner star gear, with steel balls rolling between them, transmitting power at a constant velocity through the rolling action of the steel balls. This structure ensures stable power transmission even when the angle between the half-shaft and wheel changes significantly during turning.
Driveshaft Tube
The driveshaft tube is a major part of the driveshaft, a hollow cylindrical tube structure. Its main role is to connect the universal joints at both ends, providing a stable path for power transmission. Driveshaft tubes are usually made of high-strength steel, possessing sufficient strength and rigidity to withstand torque.
The length of the driveshaft tube is designed based on the vehicle's wheelbase and power transmission path. Vehicles with longer wheelbases or those requiring longer power transmission distances (such as some pickup trucks and off-road vehicles) will have relatively longer driveshaft tubes. Strict requirements are placed on the wall thickness and material quality of the driveshaft tube to ensure operational stability.
